Who would you have to be?
When we have wants or desires, there are two ways we can go with them. One way is to hope or wish or try to get them to come to us. The other is to let go of ever receiving these things or experiences and instead use them as guideposts for who we want to become. Maybe these wants and desires are really about becoming the person we want to be.For instance, if I can imagine a certain kind of relationship I would like, I could hope to find just the right person, or I could begin looking at myself and become the person who would be able to have that kind of relationship. Perhaps even the kind of person who could be like that for someone else.Another example: If I wanted to have a company or organization that was successful and influential, I could wish for the success and feel frustrated when the deals don’t go my way, I could try to hire the right people to make me successful and be frustrated when they don’t perform the way I had hoped they would, or I could look to myself through Inquiry and focus to become the kind of person who could lead that kind of organization. For practice, bring to mind one of your closest held desires or wants for yourself. Now ask who would you have to become to have that? What characteristics would you have to develop in yourself? What would you have to overcome? What kind of help, support, learning, or knowledge would you have to resource? What would it be like to be that person?
