Make Time For Nothing
Some species of sharks have to keep swimming all of the time or they can’t breathe and suffocate. To what extent are you a shark?Do you have to keep doing, creating, fixing, cleaning, talking, thinking, worrying, planning, shopping….?The other day I wrote about our schedule running us rather than us running our schedule, does your need to keep doing run you?One way to start to break the hold of this need to keep swimming is to make time every day for nothing, to create a ritual of coming to a complete stop. For many of us this is scary. Will I face boredom? Miss an opportunity? Get behind? What do you struggle with when you come to a complete stop? This is the traditional role of meditation, to change our relationship with stopping, with just being, just living. You don’t have to meditate per-se, but in essence stopping is meditating.Make time for nothing in your relationships too. Our children need time with us not doing, just being. How about some time with your spouse doing nothing? There is a freedom, a change in the texture and quality of life when we make space for nothing. Check it out and see if you can sense into the possibility of life without the need to keep doing.
